There's a trending article today from The Toronto Star (paywalled, I, surprisingly, do not subscribe) about an 825 million dollar lawsuit over the exploitation of players in the Canadian junior system. I obviously didn't read more that the opening paragraph but "Tell me something I don't already know" was my reaction.

Minnesota trading Eric Staal to Buffalo for Marcus Johansson is a monumentally weird decision

It's a good trade for Buffalo, a phrase that feels completely wrong as I'm typing it

I'm legitimately surprised he scored 7 points in 14 game with Minnesota, I remember him being completely invisible there and on Pittsburgh.

Seems like a guy who'll either go over to the KHL or take a cheap prove-it deal in the NHL.

From 31 Thoughts
His current crop includes Johansson, Joel Eriksson Ek, Nick Bjugstad, Ryan Donato, Nico Sturm and Victor Rask.

Lolol

Kaprizov second-guessing that contract now I'm sure. Best player not in the NHL gets to play with *maybe* a third-line quality centre in his rookie season? Quality, quality move.

Had the exact same thought about Kaprizov

Thank God the Wings have Larkin because their centers after him are basically the same as the Wild’s list (Filppula, Nielsen, Glendening, maybe Rasmussen — supposedly Fabbri’s getting a shot this year but he’s bad defensively on the wing, so...)

Is Mikko Koivu retiring? Seems like he’d either go to Finland or retire

:raffi:

Russo has been saying Koivu has been told he won't be resigned so he is mulling a job with the Wild or playing in Finland apparently.

God just seeing the C depth spelled out is so depressing.

Apparently the Flyers want to dump contracts (presumably Gostisbehere and/or JVR) so they can sign their RFAs.

JVR has three more years left at 7 mil cap hit per, the actual cash is less in the final year, but still. Yikes.

Ghost has three more years at 4.5 per. 3.25 mil cash each year.

JVR dropped off a bit this year and was hurt a bit. Vastly overpaid in that deal but I still think he's a middle-six wing. Maaaybe with retention / significant pick along with him. Ghost... I don't know. I personally think it's worth a shot if they get an asset along with him, but three years is a long commitment. I could see him paying off huge or being a complete waste.

JVR producing more like TVR.

Sitting Gostisbehere for Hagg was classic Vigneault.

It is incredible how much Flyers fans hate Hagg

Gostisbehere didn’t play a ton in the playoffs but I thought he looked fine when he did. I don’t know if it’s an Offensive Defenseman Syndrome thing where coaches only think of the turnovers and not the offense created.

There are only so many spots and I assume they're prioritizing Swedish players, so it's not necessarily an indictment of Lavoie. I remember when these moves first started being announced, one of The Athletic's Wings podcast guys mentioned that it's one of those "Guys would be willing to play for free in those spots, as long as they're playing."

JAred McIsaac is playing in Finland, and the language on the announcement is that he's loaned for the entire season. I'm curious if that was more of a stipulation from the Finnish team or a recognition that 1. the Wings have a lot of defensemen who might need to play in GR 2. the AHL season might not happen.

couple of things:
-koivu would be the perfect 3C for the oilers this year if he doesn't go back to finland
-if holland signs howard i'm going to scream
-it looks less and less likely that holland will qualify AA... which... man....

apparently the biggest thing with lavoie is that SHL contracts can't be terminated mid-season or something so it only made sense to have him there if he was guaranteed to play the whole year / excel? if there were question marks i understand why they wouldn't keep him but it's definitely a shame.

Maaaaaaaaybe Howard rebounds with a change of situation but he was god awful last year and a guaranteed loss for virtually all of it, plus there are other, better options out there.

I don’t know what’s going to happen with AA. He’s clearly a guy that needs very particular usage to be successful, and I don’t think his production or expected price (his agent played hardball with the Wings in the past) will leave many open doors. If he’s not qualified I think he’s best off taking a one year Prove It deal with either a contender where he might play with stars or a bottom feeder where he might get more ice time.
