We've had to do rent-a-goalie a bunch of times this year too. Not only is it stupid expensive, but the caliber of the goalie you get is super unreliable.

Last time, our spare was the goalie that subbed for Price in the Habs team skills competition thing (he works in their marketing department). And guess what? He sucked too!

I've stopped short of paying for goaltending but I assume that may come up at some point. I was fortunate last week that the kid who was going to ref our game found out we needed a goalie, wanted to play (the rest of the season, minus a few games), and switched his ref duties. I didn't think he could do it this week but he could.

The goalie who'd played most of our games through January had something pop when he was stretching out for a save. He was already dealing with some groin/muscle issue and that seemed to kill it.

I'm counting down the games until the season is over. I was planning on not running the team this summer but the high likelihood of moving at least gives me an excuse other than "It's the largest source of stress in my life and it's not worth it."

More exciting goalie news: The guy who agreed to fill in for the rest of our games (who is great) just got out of the ER, so he won't be able to play tonight. So I get to ask around last-minute for a goaltender again. I was really hoping to NOT HAVE TO DO THIS AGAIN EVERY WEEK.

I lined up a goalie. We're going to get killed but I found a goalie.

Scored the shootout winner (in playoffs we do 4-on-4 for 5 mins, then a shootout) in sudden-death 5th last night in game 1 of our semi-finals. Still feeling like a boss.

My season ended on Wednesday and presumably my time with the team I’ve played on for 10+ years.

True to form, the dumb league had a rule change so we didn’t make the playoffs and changed our last game to an opponent two levels up from us. We lost 2-1, I blocked a bunch of shots and got called for a BS penalty where I stole the puck from someone and then he stepped on my stick blade and fell over.

They called the penalty right as I passed the puck to a teammate for a 1 on the goalie chance.

I will miss playing games this summer and talking with other humans but I absolutely will not miss finding a goalie or asking people for money.

Yeah quite honestly running a team seems like a non-fun responsibility.

It wasn’t as bad when the money was less of a hassle and I didn’t have to work to find a goalie but the last two seasons were miserable. Even if I didn’t have the high probability of moving keeping me from running the team this summer, I likely would have been out.

The league did a terrible job of differentiating levels the past few seasons, too. Almost every team in our division has ringers that dominated the games, and for the first half of this year, we were playing teams that mostly had those guys. I played in this league for over ten years and honestly I’ve gotten better over that time, but I don’t remember having to chase after former college/junior players back then.

Hey I scored in the shootout in a playoff game last week too. After scoring the tying goal to send it to OT with 2:04 left. I play D on this team and score maybe 3-4 goals per year, so definitely feeling the high of my beer league heroics.

Semi-final this week

So great news... turns out I fractured a bone in my foot when I got hit by a puck 2 weeks ago. Fuck.

I blocked a shot off the side of my foot at pickup on Sunday and thought that might’ve happened.

Is your foot in a cast?

Nope. Non-displaced fracture, so just a walking boot.

The orthopedic specialist was very vague on the details but basically said "nothing moved so this will just heal on its own, walking boot is just for your comfort, come back in a month"

I've thought about getting them. I probably should because I stupidly block a lot of shots. I feel like if your leg/foot is in the right position it's fine but as someone who unknowingly fractured their tibia when a hard slap shot caught the uncovered spot above my ankle, you end up catching enough shots off-angle that it's probably best to anticipate that instead of crossing your fingers and hoping for the best.

I seem to stupidly block a lot of shots too. This one I didn't even see though. I was boxing out a guy in the crease and I had no idea there was a point shot coming through traffic. I don't even think it was a hard shot, just a wrister that caught me in a bad spot on the in-step.

Hey NA I'm going to be in your neck of the woods this weekend. Jr is playing a tournament with the MONTREAL FUTURE PROSPECTS 08 (lol) in such glamorous hockey towns as Hookset NH, Hudson NH and Tyngsborough MA.

Ha I had no fucking clue where Tyngsborough was, looks like it's 23 miles northwest of me (past Lowell). That sure sounds like a tiny Massachusetts town, though. I briefly looked up what's there and mac & cheese place Mr. Mac looks good as hell.

I'm going to see Jawbox on both Friday and Saturday, sadly won't be able to pretend to be a scout for MONTREAL FUTURE PROSPECTS 08. I could really fuck with some kids' hopes and dreams, sorry if there are any kids that need to be taken down a notch.

They just rearranged the schedule so it looks like I will spending most of my weekend at the Tyngsborough Skate 3 arena. Haven't looked up anything yet, but we're staying in Nashua and I expect the beer selection will be solid.

I'm going to attempt to play myself tonight - 5 weeks from the day I fractured my foot. Probably kinda stupid, but I don't think I can do any damage and I'm getting antsy not being able to do nothing.
