I read this earlier and still watched this movie tonight for some reason. Hoo boy it is bad.

How old are we supposed to assume Tom Cruise characters are?

Yeah I've been trying to figure out what's remotely successful in this film and I'm coming up short. I kind of liked Jake Johnson's character because he was like "Everything you come up with is a terrible idea!" (entirely accurate) and then he gets the shit end of the stick from all of those ideas, but then he's stuck hanging out with Tom Cruise at the end of the film.

I assume Cruise is supposed to be 40? Maybe? I have to wonder much longer he's going to be able to throw himself into action roles -- he's 55 and I think most other actors in those sorts of roles cool it around his age. But I can't imagine his schtick working if he's actually supposed to be 60 in a film.

Yeah, and to his credit this is really one of the first times I didn't buy him as maybe a late-30s/early-40s type, which is probably one reason the chemistry with his beautiful, mid-20s co-star fell so flat.

:nonissiren: Mild Spoiler :nonissiren:

I do love the idea that they actually thought this movie would kick off the "Dark Universe." I guess the idea was Cruise would just cameo in all the movies, as the living god, gallivanting around the world on horseback, searching for the cure to evil?

I think it’s pretty safe to say no one cares if we spoil The Mummy (2017).

The dumbest thing about the Mummyverse is how excruciating all of the Crowe scenes were, and someone must’ve been like “Yeah, that’s the stuff that builds franchises.”

Between this and the DC universe, we really should appreciate Marvel more.

Alien Covenant is on HBOGo now and I know I’m going to begrudgingly watch it soon.

I didn’t mind (most of) Prometheus as much as the general internet did but I have no enthusiasm to sit through this one.

It seems impossible, but somehow the Walking Dead has gotten even dumber in between the 1st and 2nd halves of this season.

Also bad? McMafia, which I badly wanted to like. It should be right up my alley. There was a bunch of hype that the lead actor might be the next Bond, but he is possibly the worst actor on TV (now that Coral is dead).

I think I watched two and a half seasons of The Walking Dead before I realized it felt like punishing myself

I haven’t even heard of McMafia

i watched 3 billboards after the oscars, and for the first hour I was actually pretty into it.

then i went to bed, and put on the second half later and was totally not into it.

i dunno if it just got really bad in the second half, or i should stop watching movies in bits and pieces. either way, none of the characters really seemed to meaningfully develop or interact apart from the beautiful handwritten suicide letters dot com scenes

i also watched the director's cut of kingdom of heaven which was insanely good. i particularly liked ridley scott immediately following up probably the worst, most boring sex scene ever filmed with a euphorically filmed battle scene

That viewing experience seems to encapsulate the critical / internet response to the film

I'm at a house in the middle of nowhere for a week and committed to watching long gruelling movies all the way through. Watched Les Miserables (2012) last night. It was pretty fucking miserable!

Nope but I'm limited to UK Netflix fare. Might watch Robert Altman's Nashville tonight which is even longer than "Les Miz"

I like McMafia but the acting overall is not great.

watched La La Land instead, 2 musicals in 2 nights. LLL was a lot more fun to hate though!

I'm not a musicals guy and dreaded watching La La Land but it wasn't nearly as bad as I anticipated. Conversely, Frau Artillery was looking forward to it and kinda shrugged about it.

It's weird hearing my first name in a movie.

I remember during that opening song of LLL I immediately regretted starting it and thought about bailing, but I have some weird pride about sticking it out with movies.

Ended up not hating the rest of it, mostly due to the stock Gosling character who is kinda grumpy and gets flustered and mean really easily but is still funny and charming.

Finally say Blade Runner 2049 on the weekend.

Visually amazing, I actually liked it about as much as the original.

I've been meaning to see this, missed it in the theater and now I'm waiting for it to hit streaming or me to cave and use Redbox or whatever.

La La Land was good and fun, though i thought emma stone outshone ryan gosling.

Blade Runner 2049 was really good. the soundtrack gives me instant anxiety, which is what i like from sci fi.

I'm going through all of assayas's stuff right now, and blabbing embarrassingly about it to everyone.
