I’m trying not to go overboard with the hype on him but it’s entirely possible that he’ll be the Wings’ best defenseman when he joins the team.

Hey the SHL is a pretty good league! Filip Johansson has even given me some hope this year and looks like he might not be a total bust?

Seems like Mattias Brome has played himself into a spot, which I'm pleased about. I would prefer to see the minimum amount of Adam Erne this year.

Svech is out, presumably from an arm/shoulder injury suffered during practice. Helm is still "unfit to play."

Supposedly the Wings are interested in PLD

Someone on Twitter suggested
it would end up looking something similar to Mantha + Veleno + 2nd (NYR) + Cholowski/Viro for PLD
Someone else suggested
mantha, berggren, mcissac and cholo for PLD who says no?
PLD looked great in the playoffs and he'd fill the Wings' biggest hole (a top-two center) but Mantha's their best offensive player, on a reasonable deal, and hasn't yet played up to his full potential. The Wings are also still Very Bad and trading Mantha and someone like Berggren or Veleno doesn't feel like a step forward.

Prashanth Iyer did just PLD for Mantha straight up, which I assume Beej fans wouldn't go for. I don't want to trade Mantha but that seems fair, given their respective contract situations.

Watching the Red Wings' training camp intrasquad game and one of the commentators is relentlessly positive about every guy and the team in general.

"Anthony Mantha is a joy and a pleasure to watch when he's crankin' it out"

The Detroit Red Wings today assigned forwards Riley Barber, Kyle Criscuolo, Turner Elson, Taro Hirose, Chase Pearson, Evgeny Svechnikov and Dominic Turgeon, defensemen Joe Hicketts, Brian Lashoff and Dylan McIlrath and goaltender Kaden Fulcher to the American Hockey League's Grand Rapids Griffins. The Red Wings also assigned six players to their taxi squad: forwards Michael Rasmussen and Givani Smith, defensemen Dennis Cholowski and Gustav Lindstrom and goaltenders Kevin Boyle and Calvin Pickard. Additionally, the Red Wings designated forward Darren Helm and defensemen Christian Djoos and Jared McIsaac as non-roster and released goaltender Pat Nagle from his professional tryout.
Pretty boring lineup, would've liked Rasmussen to make the team. I guess it's essentially this right now

Mantha / Larkin / Tuzz
Namestikov / Fabbri / Zadina
Brome / Filppula / Ryan*
Nielsen / Glendening / Gagner
(Extra: Erne)

Hronek / DeKeyser
Staal / Stetcher
Nemeth / Merrill
Biega

Djoos is still quarantining, Helm is either hurt or sick. Ryan and Erne haven't been in practice lately, not sure whether they'll play on Thursday.

I hope the taxi squad guys get games in. Not sure how soon that'll happen but I'd rather see Rasmussen and Smith than Erne and Nielsen. Wings for Breakfast talked about how Cholowski works better at the NHL level than the AHL level (and how this is likely his last shot) and I'd like to see him.

That's fine, I guess? I feel like the defensive pairs will shift around a bit, but those make more sense than some previous ones. Nemeth is a good stay-at-home guy for Hronek. Dekeyser's not going to play 25 minutes a night to start. Staal probably needs someone like Stetcher to get him out of trouble.

Hicketts logging 22 NHL games so far is about right. He’s a solid AHL defenseman and at best an emergency call up. I like the guy, he throws some big hits for being so short, but he’s neither defensively sound nor offensively impactful to make it as a regular.
