How has Nurse been overall this year? His stat line is great but is it enough to offset whatever egregious defensive errors he's making?
he has been better this year, for sure. he still has some pretty bad lapses in defensive zone coverage. i think this can be attributed to 3 things:
1. he has taken a small step forward in terms of his reads in the defensive zone. lots of good little plays to break cycles and tilt the ice in the other direction.
2. he's riding a percentage bender. his PDO is really high and he's been lucky at both ends of the rink.
3. nurse is on the ice with mcdavid a lot, and mcdavid is playing way better defensively. as a centre, this is part of mcdavid's game that needed to improve and it has.

this was a very unexpected result. if smith had a competent start and the oilers had some luck (i think they hit 4 crossbars) it could have easily been a 6-1 game. that said, this is the type of game the oilers usually lose and i was super pleased to see them score four unanswered to get 2 points in regulation.

yamamoto, kahun and haas are absolute demons on the forecheck. feels like puljujarvi is digging out so many pucks along the boards. they're winning 50/50 pucks and races like it's 2005.

i'm a little worried about their depth and the third line to actually win a playoff series, but at the same time, this team does not miss turris or kassian one bit and what they have going is working.

caleb jones has been the oilers 3rd best defender this season (by eye test and by the numbers) and tippett is finally ending his run of being healthy scratched for 12(?) games in a row.

looks like they're going with jones/bouchard on the third pair. i'm pretty hopeful this is a pairing that works, if not immediately, long into the future. two years down the road it could look like:

Nurse/Klef - Bear
Jones - Bouchard
Broberg - Lagesson
Samorukov

if i can wrap up this string of posts by saying, I think it would serve tippett really well to run 7D and 11F when everyone on the blueline is healthy. tippett has done it out of necessity this year but i think there's a case to be made for more of it.

there are way too many non-factor forwards in the bottom 6 and some of the specialized deployment he has tinkered with has been working really well. gives you this lineup at 5v5:

ennis - mcdavid - puljujarvi
kahun - draisaitl - yamamoto
haas - nuge - archibald
spares: nygaard/khaira

nurse - bear
jones - bouchard
lagesson - larsson
spare: barrie

allows you to run three fast, skilled and tenacious lines. leaves haas/archibald and nygaard/khaira as PKers and limited minutes specialists. on D, you get the best pairings doing their thing together, with barrie on PP1 and playing spot duty in the offensive zone with nurse. larsson/lagesson handle main PK duty and nurse/bear are on the second unit.

now, what do you do with kassian, russell, turris, neal? that's a question for holland. this won't happen but it would be great to see tippett try some of it and play to the strengths of his lineup.

Seems like an overreaction to me but I guess after the first couple of weeks, fans thought they were winning the Cup

I was reading a Twitter thread from an Athletic writer about how Claude Julien is a good dude, and it linked to a Peter Worrell piece about the racism he’d encountered in junior and the NHL. Did not know this about the current Blues coach!
I think it was my third game in the NHL with the Florida Panthers; there was this incident with Washington Capitals forward Craig Berube, who called me “monkey.” The story made a stir at the time.
He made a genuine apology and all but man

Anyway here’s the piece, it’s excellent

Not sure the bigger oddity from the Rangers/Flyers:

- Brendan Smith had the second-most ice time among Rangers' d-men and Jack Johnson had the third
- The Flyers have guys named Connor Bunnaman and Carsen Twarynski

I read the LeBrun grab-bag piece in The Athletic that talks about how the 2021 draft might be delayed until January 2022 (not great) or a week before the 2022 draft (dumb as hell) and there are multiple people in the comments talking about how the age should be raised for draft eligibility, including one dude who said 20!

The forward lines and how good they've been make zero sense.

Greenway - JEEK - Fiala
KK - Rask- Zucc
Foligno - Hartman - Parise
Sturm - Bonino - Bjugstad

Like what the hell...

Sorta find it funny that the PP is so bad Evason is just like 'fuck it just roll the regular lines' and it's been slightly better.

there has been talk about raising the draft age for so long - this is the perfect situation to do it and it's actually born out of practicality

19 seems possible but 20? No way. It's pretty clear that a lot of first-rounders could hang at the AHL level in their D+1 year, and if you raised the draft age, you'd have even more guys idling in major junior longer than they should.

I can only imagine the level of resistance from the players' association. Players are hitting their peaks earlier now and getting big contracts sooner, so if you take away a year of Getting Paid and push back when they're going to Really Get Paid, it's not going to go over well.

What would be the incentive for the players? I don't see the owners raising the cap or changing free agency ages.

19 makes sense, 20 is over the top.

the number of 18 year olds that step into the NHL and actually make an impact is nil. even 1st/2nd overall selections, you can't tell me that lafreniere, hughes, kakko, dahlin, hischier would not have benefited from another year of development outside of the NHL before stepping in and getting crushed.

i take your point about the CHL, you ideally want those guys to be in a higher level of competition simply based on the number of guys that explode in their draft + 1 year. it would be really cool to see the CHL to do something similar to the NTDP in the US - all of the best players in the nation for that year's draft class, training and developing together.
