1st and a 3rd would be the compensation, which honestly is a good bet from Carolina. Presumably a late first.

It would affect Kotkaniemi's QO moving forward.

I don't think he's that great of a player! Definitely not worth 6.1! But I don't think Bergevin can just walk away from him, either. I predict he matches.

Literally no other team would be as fun as a recipient of this offer sheet as the Habs. Just fucking perfect.

The logic is kinda fucked from the Canes perspective too though. If they get the player, they're stuck with the qualifying offer at $6.1 next year too.

It’s possible that the Canes (or the Habs) could avoid that by signing an extension under that amount

I’d put more likelihood onto one of those teams properly handling contract negotiations

Assuming KK doesn't sign for 3x$4m or something knowing that he has that $6.1 QO in his back pocket.

Also hearing many Eichel conspiracy-type theories tonight.

"The Canes just screwed us out of Eichel"

"The Canes just helped us be able to trade for Eichel"

seriously.

Hey can you do me favour? Can you call Phil who runs my beer league team and try to explain to him how the CBA works? That would be a big help. Thanks

LOL

Just saw a Habs fan in The Athletic comment section shrug this off with "He's not that good, now we can go out and get a better second-line center"

Good luck with that! I'm sure there are plenty of great candidates still on the market! Frans Nielsen, perhaps?

The one-year contract on the offer sheet, which Kotkaniemi has signed, has a salary of US$6,100,015 and also carries a $20 signing bonus. Kotkaniemi wears No. 15, which explains the dollar figure on his salary.

The $20 signing bonus is an obvious shot at Canadiens GM Marc Bergevin since Carolina’s star centre Sebastian Aho wears No. 20.
The pettiness of this is amazing for an NHL team.

Former Wings draft pick that wasn't signed

Fans were initially very confused when he wasn't signed (sounds like it was the team's choice, despite him having a solid year in college) but then the Wings traded for Nedeljkovic and drafted Cossa

I had a dream last night where Nick Lidstrom was very very angry that he was being told that he'd be playing with Chris Chelios because he didn't like how he played and was starting to throw things around and get physical in the dressing room. I (in my role as "fan") took Nick aside for a lunch of spaghetti to chat with him about it and try to calm him down. I told him that I very much respected him, that he was one of the best defencemen of all time, and thatI heard what he was saying, but that playing with Chelios would actually benefit the rest of the team because their divergent skillsets would allow the rest of the D to play with complementary players and make them stronger. He seemed to hear that, and just before I woke up, Chris came over and they were civil and positive with one another.
