Thoughts:

Way more than I thought they’d get, not a destination I’d considered.

Feels like an indictment on Huberdeau and his playoff performance this year. Also they wouldn’t be able to sign both Huberdeau and Weegar moving forward.

Flames need to reup those guys or trade them at the deadline.

I don’t know how the Panthers had another first to trade.

Low key feel like Tkachuk is overpaid and will come back to earth scoring-wise.

I don’t know how I feel about the Panthers… great top-6 with some depth that could make the top-9 one of the best, but I dunno at all about the backend. It’s Ekblad and… some guts (Montour? Forsling?) and who knows what goalies are going to show up.

Yeah I don’t think they’ll be anywhere near as good this year

A big reason why the Panthers were so good last year was the scoring depth. They had Marchment and Lundell on the third line and those guys got easy matchups.

Now they have Barkov, Tkachuk, Bennett, Verhaeghe, Reinhart, Lundell, and Duclair (when he recovers). But past that it’s a crapshoot. Hornqvist is old, Lomberg / White / Cousins / Luotsariririeino are all Bottom Six guys. They’re not going to be able to put Lundell with two solid dudes and expect him to get 50 points. They have some forward prospects and maybe Denisenko is a good third liner, but I don’t know.

The D is a bigger question like you said. Forsling has worked out for them but is he their 2D?

On the plus side they have some more cost certainty without Huberdeau or Weegar being UFAs next offseason, and if you’re not sure that Huberdeau can win in the playoffs, you can’t give him 9x8.

I saw a comment that salary paid out in bonuses all goes to your home state tax, so presumably this saves Tkachuk some money. I don't trust comments on tax issues that much, though.

First sign and trade in NHL history apparently

Just read Huberdeau had like 80% ozone starts last season lol still way, way more than I ever thought Treliving would get. Dude is amazing at saving his job with blockbuster trades.

From The Athletic
One source said the Blues’ proposal included Vladimir Tarasenko, Marco Scandella and a high draft pick; the team officially declined comment.
Yeah I see how that’s not going to do it

Wings signed Robert Hagg, continuing their plan to put 6 bottom-pair defensemen out on the ice and see if anyone notices

Pysyk just had surgery for a torn achilles (4-6 months), that's probably why they got Hagg

Wheeler’s top fifty prospects list is anti-Yzerman propaganda

He lives 15 minutes from the Bell Centre and isn’t interested in playing for the Habs, just believe me

The top 5 of that draft class is so weird in hindsight: Matthews/Laine considered by many to be nearly dead even (when in doubt, take the C), then PLD/Pulju/Juolevi rounding it out? What the hell, man.

Matthew Tkachuk went sixth and I remember some people thinking it was a reach and he wasn't going to do much offensively. Alexander Nylander was another bust.

I will say that I really wanted Charlie McAvoy to somehow fall to the Wings -- maybe if he had, Holland wouldn't have traded Datsyuk's contract to Arizona and moved down from Chychrun to Cholowski.
