I've seen them 6 times now I think.

The first time was in Chicago with Ganger opening, which remains one of the best shows I've seen. Ganger was another Scottish post-rock band, although their early stuff (with a 50% different lineup) was much more like Krautrock. The lineup I saw had the foxy singer/bassist and the guitarist who later formed Aereogramme. Two basses, very rhythm-driven.

Mogwai played a great mix of Young Team / CODY / Ten Rapid / EP stuff https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/mogwai/1999/metro-chicago-il-73d306cd.html including one of my favorite b-sides, "Small Children in the Background." The closing song "Like Herod" was the loudest thing I'd seen to that point, and probably still ranks near the top. Stuart jammed 4-5 things in his guitar, including an action figure.

I also saw them in Chicago on the Rock Action tour, they had a cellist with them and it sounded great.

After I moved to Boston I bought tickets to see them at a smaller venue here, but they kept getting postponed / moved for various reasons (medical issues with the drummer, visa issues, etc.). I think I used tickets from two years earlier and a different venue and still got in. I think I saw them twice at the House of Blues, which is not the greatest venue, if you can imagine, and they played iffy setlists both times (very heavy on the songs I wasn't as into on the albums they were touring).

In January I saw them do a live performance along with the documentary Atomic. It was alright but they only played the soundtrack stuff, which isn't my favorite, and they didn't do an encore or anything.

This time they had major sound issues early in the set, but after that they played the best songs from the new album and a bunch of favorites from old albums. The best show from them since the Chicago dates.

I did see Angel Olsen at the House of Blues on Monday. She was great but I don't think all of her material works in that context.

Chuggo is a well documented Cranberries fan

Are you still able to listen to music in there?
We’re not allowed iPods or burnt CDs because you can pass on information with them. I’ve got a Sony Discman with 5 CDs. They are Fabulous From Nothin’ to Somethin’, Young Buck Straight Outta Cashville, Young Buck Buck the World, Sisters of Mercy The Split, and The Cranberries No Need to Argue. Dolores O’Riordan is one of the most brilliant singer-songwriters of all time. She sings me to sleep every night in my cell. All my CD cases are usually empty, like the Young Buck ones, because a lot of the brothers like to borrow them. Except for The Cranberries. It’s probably the safest CD in the entire prison.

RIP Mark E. Smith

I had a weird relationship with The Fall, since for a long time the only ones I had physical copies of were Extricate and The Frenz Experiment, which are both fine but not exactly their peak. Honestly, not having records readily in print is a big hurdle for me, since I listen to vinyl more than any other format (including digital), so it wasn't until the first round of them started getting reissued a couple of years ago that I really spent time with each one. I love Live at the Witch Trials and it cracks me up that the main guitarist was fired shortly thereafter.

I ordered Perverted by Language on Wednesday and it arrived today. I'd already played all of the records up through This Nation except for Hex and that one today.

RIP MES. Hilarious and brilliant guy. Their work from 1977-1986 is some of my favorite music of all time. Just read his autobiography 'Renegade' about 5 months ago and it was great. Love how he just refused to quit and didn't give a damn what anyone thought.

Yeah sad stuff but as someone who never really found a way into his stuff/the Fall I've had a really illuminating week listening to all the songs that pitchfork and the guardian and NTS radio have told me to listen to. Makes me realise how indebted the style of psych especially that I'm into is to the guy, stuff like moon unit or residual echoes first few albums.

Yeah so many of their best songs were non-album singles.

Got an odd request if any of you dudes have this song anywhere. I don't use anything like SoulSeek anymore so single songs are sort of hard to just find. Anyway, I'm trying to find a copy of Pete Rock's remix of Public Enemy's Shut Em Down.

I haven't heard anything good lately.

this is impossible to find on youtube in canada. it's the best remix ever but they keep blocking it outside of the states.

bit disappointed in the new low album, NA. It's missing everything I love about Low.

I found a copy of it...it's a little muted but clean. I do love that version. There's nothing on YouTube in the US for it either. It's on SoundCloud though!!!

saw hot snakes last night. god damn what a show. crowd was going absolutely bananas. they were a little tentative for the first few songs but once they hit xox they were just rolling. setlist was something like

death camp fantasy
lax
suicide invoice
i hate the kids
gar forgets his insulin
xox
who died
why don't it sink in?
six wave hold down
i need a doctor
death doula
10th planet
jericho sirens
having another?
if credit's what matters i'll take credit
automatic midnight
no hands

this mystic decade
plenty for all
braintrust
hi-lites
retrofit

I would like to see Bill Callahan again.

I'm seeing the Swirlies open up for Nothing on Sunday and Andy Cohen from Silkworm / Bottomless Pit play a solo acoustic living room show on Thursday.

this was his first show in vancouver since he opened for joanna newsom on the ys tour

it was almost entirely his B.C. era stuff except for a "river trinity" (where he played parts of river guard, rock bottom riser, red apples) and let me see the colts.

ride my arrow, jim cain, and drover were my highlights. surprisingly light on dream river material, but he played almost all of apocalypse.

"Drover" is so good.

I liked Dream River but I never got into it the same way as a bunch of his other records.
