I respect very much the people who decide that being a beerless grainless weedless borg is sometimes not worth being an NHLer for a few years

I've just watched Jiro dreams of sushi for the first time and I can't decide if I think it's a really sad film

Doug Ford is the price of the Leafs having a good team and it's not worth it, not even close

I really think this is the year the Canucks are by far the facto worst team in the league. only real competition might be Ottawa, or Detroit?

their offence is just so bad. Boeser and Pettersson should be nice to watch, though as a Canuck fan, you mostly watch them anxious that they're about to suffer a career-ending injury. Horvat is mostly good. Baertschi and Goldobin at least show some skill, occasionally. so that's 5 players that you don't cringe or look away from the game when they get the puck. almost enough to make up a crappy top-6!

beyond that, it's a foundational tableau of ineptness: Granlund, Sutter, Leipsic, Beagle, Schaller, Roussel, Eriksson, Virtanen, Motte, Gaunce, Archibald. imagine watching an offence for 82 games in which these players comprise the majority of your "attack".

their defence is somehow worse. Edler and Tanev are fine at keeping things from being swarm-Oilers bad, but not much beyond that.

after those two, there is Gudbranson, Del Zotto, Stecher, Hutton, Pouliot. 2 of these guys will be asked to be top-4 d-men, when on most nights, they're barely NHL-caliber.

well, at least we have mediocre goaltending to save us!

Detroit will be bad but I feel like they're going to play well enough to be fifth-worst or something. Howard / Bernier isn't a bad tandem. The biggest issue is the defense, where they have three third-pairs.

My guess is Ottawa, because of the comedic value of being the worst but having to give up the first pick and what must be an absolutely lifeless locker room after they got rid of Karlsson and Stone has one foot out the door.

We've already mentioned this but Ott, Det, Mtl Play each other 6 times and somebody has to win those games.

My guess is Vancouver.

i've watched a few oilers preseason games and here are my observations.

-so far, bouchard is exactly what was expecting: a strong, mature, offensive d-man who is suspect in his own zone. hopefully he can refine his defensive positioning and make some improvements there. i expect he'll play all of the 19/20 season with the oil. he will be an NHLer.
-the play of puljujarvi and yamamoto is really encouraging, they've both looked great. i think puljujarvi has the potential to go 20-20-40 this year, but yamamoto may need one more year.
-rattie has picked up where he left off last season, another encouraging sign. he has a lot of warts in his game and skillset but he makes smart plays and performs well with skill players.
-i wasn't super high on the ryan mcleod pick this year, but he has looked really impressive in preseason action. great tools and a really strong playmaker. he could be a substantial piece going forward. i expect he will be a full time NHLer by 20/21 if his development stays on track.

these seem to be the lines that we'll see on opening night.

RNH - MCDAVID - RATTIE
LUCIC - DRAISAITL - RIEDER
KHAIRA - STROME - PULJUJARVI
CAGGIULA - BRODZIAK - KASSIAN
ABERG

KLEFBOM - LARSSON
NURSE - RUSSELL
JERABEK - BENNING
GRAVEL

i would much rather seen draisaitl go with rieder and puljujarvi but fuck. i have no idea what you do with lucic. he doesn't fit on any line.

Boucher had him on the ice with Tkachuk and Stone and if he clears waivers that's where he will be slotted again.

I feel like he's done less than I would have expected for getting that big / long of a contract. He's a good player but has he done more than Noah Hanifin, for example?
