post-game adam burish: "either the red wings were out late drinking with their dads or the hawks had a great start"

i've noticed burish talks about boozing pretty regularly when he's on air.

there was one broadcast from a new restaurant in the UC that apparently specialized in the cocktail the old fashioned. burish is boasting about his wisconsin roots and native drinking prowess. he's basically dropping hints, almost beggin for one through two breaks. by the third break someone finally got him one

This was definitely a "Let 'em play!" game (except for hooking, they didn't allow that).

Mostly a bummer that there was a brief second when it seemed like Mantha was going to tie it and then Kane scored and Toews got the empty netter.

I wonder if the Red Wings' emphasis on diet / nutrition cuts down on the drinking.

The Wings looking like shit in the first could also be that they played yesterday in Buffalo and had to travel.

Ducks are a mess. Love that it’s a GM/coach situation now.

Less than two months ago, they were good? Like the Avalanche, who have similarly fallen off the face of the earth, loser point by loser point.

One of the low-key reasons the Canucks are in the playoff hunt right now is the expansion draft. Wild lost Tuch and others, ducks lost Theodore. We lost sbisa.

I like this feeling. I endorse this feeling.

They’re going to get worse at the deadline, just not sure how much worse. I think Nyquist is gone. Howard and Jensen are maybes, although I’d rather just keep them. I’d prefer Daley getting traded to free up a slot for ME SO HRONEK but it’s hard to trade someone who isn’t playing.

I looked at the standings and it’s kind of amazing that Edmonton’s only four points up on the Wings.

In terms of lottery teams,

Colorado via Ottawa: There would be some enjoyment from Euge dealing a pick for Duchene and losing Duchene in free agency and the pick being #1, but they’ve had a lot of high picks and Mackinnon and Rantanen are better than any Wing.
Detroit: They were presumably lucky at Zadina falling but they haven’t had any lottery luck in the last few years. They could really use a top center prospect.
New Jersey: On one hand, they stink, on the other hand, they got Hischier two years ago. Also fuck the Devils.
Kings: They bottomed out and who knows when Villardi will be healthy. But they won Cups more recently than the other teams and I think this is what happens when you mortgage the future.
Ducks: They absolutely do not deserve a break. They should be better than they are right now.

Anyway Edmonton is going to win the lottery and the Wings are going to finish second worst and draft fifth.

NHL.com had a post about Red Wings prospects that was encouraging for their goaltenders but uh when you're released by a WHL team that is not so encouraging

Quote:
ZABLOCKI A VIPER: Right-winger Lane Zablocki (79th overall, 2017) was on the move again at the Jan. 10 WHL trade deadline.

Zablocki, 19, was released by the Kelowna Rockets.

"It wasn't an easy decision to release Lane," Rockets GM and president Bruce Hamilton said.

Zablocki produced 4-8-12 totals in 28 games with the Rockets, which was his fifth WHL team. He's also played for the Regina Pats, Red Deer Rebels, Lethbridge Hurricanes and Victoria Royals.

The 6-foot, 190-pound Zablocki, 20, signed with the Vernon Vipers of the BCHL, where he has put up 4-4-8 numbers through his first eight games.

The 2017 draft was the one where the Wings went safe / low-ceiling with a lot of their picks, and this isn't a great sign for that approach.

They had four 3rd rounders that year and went with Kasper Kotkansalo (defensive defenseman, doing fine at BU but his ceiling is Jonathan Ericsson), Keith Petruzzelli (big goalie, seems to be developing OK), Zablocki, and Zach Gallant (bottom-six forward).

When the return for Nick Jensen comes up and it's "Maybe a 3rd rounder," I think about this draft and hope they hold onto the guy who is at worst a solid, smooth-skating third-pair defenseman.

Gustav Lindstrom was their seemingly low-ceiling second-rounder but he seems to be panning out better than expected. Still a concern that the next two picks were Jason Robertson and Aleksi Heponiemi.

Daley is in, Cholowski is out, Wings fans are mad.

Cholowski has made some bad mistakes lately and they would really benefit from showcasing Daley for a trade so I don’t mind.

Holy crap Mike Green just had the most egregious giveaway I’ve seen in ages

Somehow the Shreds didn’t score after receiving a “pass” all alone in the slot
