How'd Montreal, one of the most progressive cities in North America, end up with guys like him, Max Domi, and Andrew Shaw???

Anyway, it was a really fun game. Glad Bob Cole got to call it.

Honestly I think the default for hockey players is either conservative or oblivious. The vast majority of NHL-level guys have been in a hockey bubble since they got on skates, and very few of them have any reason to care about anything beyond their sport / livelihood (unless they have an innate sense of empathy).

You think about the type of parents who are single-minded on their kids being athletes, and how that sense of priorities reflects their own mindset, politically, socially, etc. One of my neighbors got his son into every sport imaginable and thought I’d have Neu! 15 on skates by a year old, but he’s never been particularly interested and I wanted to wait until he’d actually listen. Said neighbor is very much a conservative politically and I wonder if he’ll be disappointed in his son if he doesn’t end up being good at some sport.

Unless they’re exposed to different ideas, kids are likely to inherit their parents’ political idiologies (I often think about my second-grade election results, in which a friend of mine and I were the only students to vote Dukakis over Bush), and hockey players are just hanging out with other hockey players. And probably their angry dads.

I think living and playing in Montreal might be good for them. Although I find his politics gross, I welcome Poehling’s success for the sake of my very bad keeper league team.

Hockey is a rich people sport anyways so of course it’s got a bunch of shitheads in it.

I try not to worry about Connor McDavid probably being oblivious at best and instead focus on how some players, like DSP, Connolly, and Holtby, can end up being aware human beings. I hate “Stick to sports” as much as anyone, but you do have to endure some level of cognitive dissonance / suspension of disbelief to be a hockey fan. Owners milk cities for arenas, fighting and head hits cause long-term brain damage, the league will undoubtedly use another lockout as a weapon against the union, etc etc etc. The easiest way for me not to worry about the majority of NHL players being conservative or oblivious is simply to not think about it, to focus on the game itself. Most hockey players keep their opinions to
themselves, at least until they retire (thanks for that, Brian Rafalski), so it’s relatively rare when a guy like Poehling is openly a MAGA chud. I’ll choose not to root for him and opt to root for someone like Holtby, but again, both extremes are rare cases.

The most encouraging thing for me is the frequency of players doing community outreach / charity. If they’re actually involved in such things (Kyle Turris’s active involvement with the team of kids with developmental disabilities comes to mind), I think they’re at least going to be exposed to hardships outside of their bubble. Hopefully empathy really kicks in, but who knows.

I saw Oilers fans calling for a full playoff suspension of Giordano but I watched it this morning and I see zero malicious intent there. He probably should have just let McDavid carry it in alone but that play happened so fast. He was clearly trying to reach for the puck. It's Unfortunate.

I just watched the play and I know he was going for the puck, but given McDavid's speed on that play, there was no way he wasn't also going to trip McDavid as well. I don't think it was malicious or suspendable but if I tried that in men's league or pick-up I'd get a fucking earful.
