Olympic hockey thread
Re: Olympic hockey thread
It was silly to treat the number 1 goalie spot as a foregone conclusion. Oh well whatever nevermind, 2 or 3 more days of complaining about this tops
Re: Olympic hockey thread
Also I finally watched a full replay of the winner and that was McDavid vs Jack Hughes defending on the rush before the winner. McDavid might just be the most Leaf at Heart player of all time

Re: Olympic hockey thread
Marner was better in the earlier games in my opinion. Forgot about Jarvis, he looked pretty good yesterday. I didn’t think they got much down the middle past McDavid — needed to have MacKinnon drive his own line.
Re: Olympic hockey thread
Yup, this was noticeable to me -- I probably heard the names of those three, Sid, and Wilson probably as much as I heard the rest of the forward group together.sutterfamily wrote: ↑Mon Feb 23, 2026 9:18 am Like, feels kinda nuts but Canada had almost no secondary scoring from forwards almost the entire tournament (not counting France, obv)

As players roared when the president shouted out Connor Hellebuyck for his masterpiece in earning the United States its third men’s hockey gold medal, Hellebuyck yelled, “How you doing, Don?”
Re: Olympic hockey thread
I mean the top 3 forwards all played 21+, next highest was Marner at 17, then Stone at under 15. Some of these guys just didn't get much ice. This website called hockeystats.com credits Celebrini with 10 chances, Marner with 6 "chance assists". The shot chart looks like that survivorship bias airplane diagram meme.

Re: Olympic hockey thread
I wonder how hard it was for guys like Suzuki and Horvat to get their rhythm playing 10-11 minutes

A bunch of guys laughing about "having to invite the women's team too" was shitty.

I saw a tweet this morning and would look for it but I deleted my account, so... Sandy had a pretty rough gold medal game xG% wise (based on this tweet's graph) but he looked generally good in the tournament.

Re: Olympic hockey thread
I can’t imagine that many of the US players had a good game in terms of xG, given how much Canada caved them in for two periods. I don’t think Quinn Hughes, Faber, McAvoy, Werenski, or Sanderson looked back out there at all.
