It was silly to treat the number 1 goalie spot as a foregone conclusion. Oh well whatever nevermind, 2 or 3 more days of complaining about this tops

Also I finally watched a full replay of the winner and that was McDavid vs Jack Hughes defending on the rush before the winner. McDavid might just be the most Leaf at Heart player of all time

Marner was better in the earlier games in my opinion. Forgot about Jarvis, he looked pretty good yesterday. I didn’t think they got much down the middle past McDavid — needed to have MacKinnon drive his own line.

Yup, this was noticeable to me -- I probably heard the names of those three, Sid, and Wilson probably as much as I heard the rest of the forward group together.

As players roared when the president shouted out Connor Hellebuyck for his masterpiece in earning the United States its third men’s hockey gold medal, Hellebuyck yelled, “How you doing, Don?”

I mean the top 3 forwards all played 21+, next highest was Marner at 17, then Stone at under 15. Some of these guys just didn't get much ice. This website called hockeystats.com credits Celebrini with 10 chances, Marner with 6 "chance assists". The shot chart looks like that survivorship bias airplane diagram meme.

I wonder how hard it was for guys like Suzuki and Horvat to get their rhythm playing 10-11 minutes

A bunch of guys laughing about "having to invite the women's team too" was shitty.

Never meet your heros, etc but allowing Patel into the room was never going to lead to good things

I saw a tweet this morning and would look for it but I deleted my account, so... Sandy had a pretty rough gold medal game xG% wise (based on this tweet's graph) but he looked generally good in the tournament.

I can’t imagine that many of the US players had a good game in terms of xG, given how much Canada caved them in for two periods. I don’t think Quinn Hughes, Faber, McAvoy, Werenski, or Sanderson looked back out there at all.

I wonder if this was actually a misfire by Hughes where he aimed to go top shelf. Kinda looks like binner read that as his intention. Part of what makes the Toews miss so painful is thinking that if he hadn't shot it so clean, if he hadn't been so alone, that he maybe flubs it along the ice or there's a deflection or changeup of sorts that goes in.

Another thing that's wild is the pass from Werenski getting past McDavid at a distance not much greater than the space into which Marner delivered the pass to McDavid for the gwg on the 4 nations, with Matthews right there. What a sport, I hate it.

US Men’s Team is attending the State of the Union

:babcock:

At least I have zero intention of subjecting myself to it. I’m trying to think of it as “We just played for our country and now we get to be honored by it” but it’s clear these assholes are psyched for Trump.

I could buy the "we respect the office of the president and are honoured by the invitation" if the fucking president himself has spent more than a decade disrespecting the office itself.

I got to watch the final game with my parents (late 70s) and son (now 18!) and it kinda felt like it could be the last time we get to experience something like that together. I can't even be mad about the outcome. All time classic game in my opinion, right up there.

In a twist, Kyle Connor is skating at Jets practice in Winnipeg right now

Isn't there a good chance that the speech is like 2.5+ hours long? It feels like an appropriate punishment for all these guys if so, I bet they so rarely have to endure boredom or sitting still without a phone
