The Joey Moss Memorial 2020 NHL Offseason Thread

Post by Grand Moff Larkin »

I'm curious what happens with Tyson Barrie. I can't see him coming back to Toronto because it seems pretty clear he wasn't a fit there. I don't know how much his FA contract will suffer from 1. the market being significantly tighter 2. his 2019-2020 performance.

The Rangers haven't had enough luck in the lottery and need to galaxy-brain themselves into Shane Wright, too

the Habs finding modest success with the Burke/Nonis Leafs' this guy must be good right? strategy has been pretty tough on me.

I wouldn't put too much emphasis on the Habs' success or the Leaves' failures. A five-game series is going to be dictated by luck / variance even more than usual. The Leaves got a bad match-up in the Beejs, the Habs got a good one in the sleepy PNES. The Habs haven't looked particularly good the last couple of games against the Flyers.

I have thought a lot about how the Flyers are a lot better with Hayes / Braun / Niskanen in the fold, and maybe the Leaves need to diversify their roster in that way (stylistically and age-wise). But I don't see how any of the issues are with Matthews.

the other day I was telling this poor sucker who had the misfortune to ask me about the Leafs about how in my opinion there wasn't really any alternative to what Dubas did on the Nylander/Marner/Matthews contracts and that it's a kind of perverse misfortune of the incompetence + sudden competence (the Nylander pick wasn't a tank year but Marner was result of a successful tank, though probably established now that Provorov or Werenski would hve been better), with these guys all having maybe career years in their RFA years at a time when the old cheap RFA contract was going extinct, on a team that had no established stars/leaders making a good but not cap busting salary to set a bit of a ceiling on what the 21 year old could get. and thinking out loud that if the 2015 pick was 7th or 15th they could have gotten a bit more needs-specific with a freedom that's not really available at 4th overall. but also it was probably a bad idea to trade out of having two picks in that 2015 first round!!!!!!!!!!!!

I checked in on HF Blackhawks to see if they were smug about losing in the first round and I saw posts about how

1. They need to fire Colliton and put in a defensive-minded coach
2. They need to fire Bowman
3. Keith is terrible, they need to get rid of him

so that was kind of satisfying, to be honest.

Ultimately I think getting a bunch of playoff games will help their development quite a bit. Dach was up and down in terms of impact on the scoresheet, but it's clear he's on his way to being a big part of that team. I wasn't particularly impressed by Boqvist, certainly don't have the pangs of regret while watching him like I do with Quinn Hughes. (FWIW, it made perfect sense that the Wings took Zadina, and I've never heard that they were actively considering Hughes in that spot.) I don't think the Blackhawks are the league's next great team or anything but it is a bummer how they seemed like they were dropping off and now they're at least back in the mix.

If the Leaves drafted 15th in 2015, they could've gotten Zachary Senyshyn!

Konecny was so obviously a steal at anywhere after Evgeny Svechnikov and he played in the O so Hunter wouldn't have even had to break protocol to take him

What are the Leaves going to do on D next year? Safe to say Barrie's gone, I can't see Ceci coming back based on their available cap space (more so than common sense, which should be enough), since they have 4.6 mil of space to fill approximately six spots? Is Liljegren ready? I assume Sandin is ready, or at least better fucking be ready. I've heard rumblings about Gudas but unless he takes a min deal they'd have to send someone out.

Rielly / Muzzin
Dermott / Sandin
Holl / ?

Rosen / Marincin

It's pretty crazy that Rielly is on a genuinely favorable contract.

Thinking about where the Wings would be if they'd taken Boeser, Konecny, or Ilya Samsonov in that spot is a bummer. They wouldn't be good, but at least they'd have either a very solid top-six winger or The Starting Goaltender of the Future, Now instead of a guy with a hamster wheel in the middle of his leg.

I very much want Svech 1.0 to make it this year and be good but I just don't see how his knee holds up.

Leafs should target a mobile top 4 dman (someone like Gardiner) and a skilled two way C (think Nazem Kadri maybe)

Need some more jam and veteran savvy. A Marc Staal-type, if you will.
