Does it matter? Unless they lose out or get lottery luck, they won't have a first-rounder the next two years, they don't have a good prospect pool, free agency this summer is dire, and the only other "bad" team in their division this year is the Panthers, who will get Barkov back next year. I can see the Leaves improving a bit next year -- better goaltending, healthier Matthews, etc. -- but I don't see how they're going to acquire two top-pair D anytime soon.

You're probably right, my feeling as well that there's only so much better they can get with current system. BUT they have a better shot of doing it with a better GM. Plus I dunno if I'd leave a terrible guy in charge over a couple of years just because you think you'll be bad. There's a non-zero chance they have to trade Matthews or something, too - you probably don't want a guy you don't trust in charge of that?

I’m not disagreeing that canning Tree was the right idea, I just don’t know what a good GM will be able to fix.

Trading Matthews seems like a real possibility. After what happened with Marner, they can’t afford to let it play out in the week before he’s a UFA.
